Ch. 196 - Adrian

Chapter 196

Adrian

Mira asked why the house had so many papers.

She was old enough to ask questions and young enough to accept only half an answer.

Adrian showed her the family policy, the community-center schedule, and the blank page from Amara’s report.

“These tell us what to do,” he said.

Mira pointed to the blank page.

“This one tells us?”

“This one reminds us we do not know everything.”

She considered that, then drew a yellow door on the paper.

Amara asked whether the door should be kept.

Mira nodded.

They framed it beside the purple wall drawing.

The house held records of choices, not proof of ownership. Every year, they would ask which papers still protected someone and which merely preserved the adults’ need to feel certain.

For now, the yellow door stayed.

That night, Adrian and Amara sat on the porch after Mira fell asleep.

“Do you think we did enough?” he asked.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Enough is not a destination,” she said. “It is a practice.”

He took her hand. She kept it.
