Amara
The final version of the family agreement contained no inheritance promise.
It promised housing without surveillance, education without succession pressure, and the right to refuse any role connected to Sterling Company. It stated that marriage created no corporate authority and that love could not be used as evidence of consent.
Adrian read the language aloud. Amara changed two words. Priya reviewed the governance section. Felix removed a paragraph that sounded like a speech. Nia added a line about ordinary life.
Mira placed a crayon mark at the bottom of the page.
No one called it a signature.
They called it a contribution.
The agreement was stored in three places: the public governance archive, the museum’s research collection, and a plain folder at home. Each copy included the same sentence:
This document cannot choose for a person who has not yet chosen.
Amara closed the folder.
The clause had once been a trap disguised as certainty. It had become a reminder that every future required room for refusal.
She looked at Adrian.
“Tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow we revise it if we need to.”
That was the only promise they made.
