The hospital chapel, a sanctuary of whitewashed walls adorned with vibrant stained glass, buzzed with the soft murmur of guests, their voices blending into a backdrop of muted joy. Tessa Rowan stood near the back, her fingers pressed against the cool stone wall, her heart racing like a trapped bird. The wedding of her colleague,a jubilant affair meant to celebrate love, had turned into a stage for chaos.
As the bride and groom exchanged vows, Tessa’s mind wandered to the emergency room just beyond the chapel doors, where sirens and the frantic shouts of her fellow nurses echoed in her ears. Suddenly, her phone vibrated violently in her pocket. She glanced at it, dread pooling in her stomach. “Rowan,” she answered breathlessly, leaning further into the shadows.
“Tessa, it’s Dad,” Arthur Rowan’s voice crackled through the line, heavy with urgency. “They found something, something at the hospital. You need to come,”
Before he could finish, the chapel doors swung open with a creak, and Callum Vane, the hospital’s director, strode in, his face a mask of pale determination. The authority that usually surrounded him felt fragile today, like glass teetering on the edge of a precipice. “Tessa, we need you in the ER. There’s been an incident,” he said, his voice calm but laced with an undercurrent of tension.
“What about my father?” she demanded, her pulse quickening. The warmth of the chapel felt suddenly stifling.
“There’s no time for that. I’ll explain everything later,” he insisted, his gaze locked onto hers, a flicker of something deeper passing between them.
The chapel’s tranquility shattered, replaced by the urgency that crackled in the air. Tessa’s heart sank as she realized the weight of the moment. She had always admired Callum's composure, but today, the shadow of his late wife loomed, merging with the threat hanging over her father.
A shared look of unspoken understanding passed between them, a silent acknowledgment of the turmoil that bound their lives together. With each step toward the door, Tessa felt the weight of unvoiced fears, her father, the hospital, and the past that threatened to engulf them.
They stepped into the bustling corridor, the sterile scent of antiseptic mingling with the distant sounds of chaos. Nurses hurried past, faces etched with concern, and the fluorescent lights flickered overhead as if echoing the turmoil in her mind. “What happened?” Tessa asked, urgency driving her words.
“There’s been an incident in the ER,” Callum replied, his eyes scanning the area as they walked briskly. “A patient was brought in, but it’s more than just a medical emergency. There are suspicions that it might involve foul play.”
Foul play. The words sent a chill down Tessa’s spine. “What do you mean? Is it someone we know?”
Callum hesitated, his expression darkening. “I can’t say yet. But we need all hands on deck. It’s serious, Tessa. Lives might be at stake.”
They reached the ER, where the frenetic energy was palpable. Medical staff rushed around, voices raised in urgent commands. The sight of the chaos ignited a spark of anxiety within Tessa. “Where’s my dad? Is he okay?” she pressed, her voice rising against the cacophony.
“I don’t know, but we have to focus on this first,” Callum replied, his tone firm yet sympathetic. “If there’s a threat, we need to contain it before anyone else gets hurt.”
Tessa swallowed hard, her mind racing. What if her father was in danger? What if this was all connected? She had always known that the hospital held secrets, but this felt different, darker.
As they entered the main treatment area, a team of doctors crowded around a gurney, their expressions grave. Tessa caught a glimpse of the patient,a woman, pale and unconscious, with a bandage wrapped around her head. “What happened to her?” Tessa asked, stepping closer.
“Gunshot wound,” one of the doctors replied without looking up. “We’re stabilizing her. We need to know how she got here.”
Callum turned to her, his eyes intense. “This is why we need you. You know the staff. You can help us figure this out.”
Tessa nodded, her heart pounding. She felt the weight of the moment pressing down on her, the urgency of the situation intertwining with her fear for her father. “Let’s do this,” she said, determination lacing her voice.
But as she stepped forward, her phone buzzed again, vibrating against her palm. Glancing down, she saw another message from her father,a single word that pierced through the chaos: “RUN.”
Panic surged through her, and she met Callum’s gaze, a silent plea in her eyes. “Callum, something’s wrong. I need to find my dad, now.”
The air thickened with dread as they locked eyes, the stakes suddenly higher than either had imagined.
Tessa Rowan had one rule for emergencies: make the next decision before anyone else could make it for her. "Call security," she told Priya as the monitor in Ward Seven began alarming. "And do not let Dr. Mercer touch my father's chart."
The hospital director stood across the corridor with a ring box and a proposal no sensible nurse would accept. Her father had uncovered fraud in the hospital's charity accounts. Now he lay sedated behind a locked door, and the person who had signed his admission order had disappeared.
"You want me to pretend to be your fiancée?" Tessa asked.
"I want the person threatening you to believe you are protected by my office," Callum said. "The threat began after your father named an insider."
"Your wife died here. Everyone thinks you covered up her care. Why would I trust you?"
"You should not trust me. You should use my access."
The answer was too direct to be a pitch. Tessa looked through the glass at her father's still face, then at the nurse's station where a chart had vanished.
"One week," she said. "No private rooms. No touching without permission."
Callum opened the ring box. "Agreed."
She took the ring, and cameras turned toward them. By evening, the hospital would have a public story. Before then, Tessa intended to find who had altered Ward Seven's medication record.
Callum lowered his voice. "The threat included your name."
Tessa slid the ring onto her finger. "Then give me the file before they decide what I did."
The ward doors locked behind them, and the monitor inside her father's room began a second alarm.
Callum reached for the access panel. "That alarm is not on the public system."
"Then someone wants us inside," Tessa said.
They entered Ward Seven together. Her father's chart was gone, but a fresh label remained on the cabinet: TRANSFER AUTHORIZED BY ROWAN.
Tessa photographed it. Callum moved between her and the camera.
"You are part of the story now," she said.
"I chose that when I gave you the ring."
The monitor alarm stopped. A message appeared on the screen: Bring the director to the boardroom, or your father loses his bed.
Tessa folded her hands. "Then we bring him, and we bring the evidence."
Callum opened the boardroom channel. The hospital heard her answer before the people threatening her could erase it. She kept the recording running, even after the screen went dark.
