Chapter 2
A Deal in Shadows
The first cost of the engagement arrived before sunrise. Tessa's access badge stopped working at Ward Seven.
"Your privileges were suspended by administration," the charge nurse said. "Callum signed the order."
Tessa crossed the corridor and found him in the glass conference room. "You promised access."
"I promised protection. Someone is using your badge to enter restricted files."
"Then investigate the badge. Do not punish me for it."
Callum placed a printed log on the table. Her credential had opened the medication cabinet at 3:12 a.m., while she was beside Priya in the cafeteria. The record also showed her father's chart had been downloaded.
"That is not my handwriting," Tessa said.
"I know. That is why I suspended you instead of calling the police."
Her anger faltered. He had chosen the option that kept her inside the building and outside the accusation. It was still a cost. Her father's care team would now answer to Dr. Sloane Mercer, the surgeon Tessa had warned Callum about.
"If Sloane gets his chart, we lose the evidence," she said.
"Then we retrieve it before the board meeting."
They entered the records basement together. Callum used an executive key; Tessa used memory. At the archive terminal, a second file appeared under her name. It contained a consent form assigning her father to an experimental treatment he had never agreed to.
"They are building a negligence case against you," Callum said.
"Against my father first. Me second."
He faced her. "The engagement becomes public in ten minutes. If we proceed, Sloane will believe you have my protection. If we cancel, he will move the chart."
Tessa signed the public statement. "Proceed. But the next person who touches that file answers to me."
The printer began producing another page, dated tomorrow, with Tessa's signature already attached. title: "Chapter 2: A Deal in Shadows" chapter: 2 bookId: the-ward-seven-promise language: en wordCount: 836 publishedAt: 2026-07-14 status: published
The ER buzzed with frantic energy, a disarray of beeping machines and hurried footsteps. Tessa moved through the chaos, her heart pounding as she scanned the faces of patients and nurses alike. Amid the frantic atmosphere, Callum’s presence beside her felt like both a lifeline and a weight. His steel-blue eyes were fixed on her, a mixture of determination and something darker swirling beneath the surface.
They finally ducked into an empty triage room, the stark white walls reflecting the harsh fluorescent lights that hummed overhead. Tessa leaned against the cool metal counter, momentarily grateful for the brief silence.
“You need to understand, Tessa,” Callum said, urgency lacing his tone. “Your father’s discovery wasn’t an accident. Someone wants to silence him.”
She turned to him, skepticism igniting a fire in her chest. “Why would you care?” she snapped, her voice sharper than she intended. “After everything that happened with your wife…”
Callum’s expression hardened, a flicker of pain flashing across his face before he masked it. “Because this hospital is more than just my past. We need to protect it,and your father.”
Before Tessa could respond, the door burst open, and Priya Shah rushed in, her cheeks flushed and eyes wide with urgency. “You both need to get in front of the board,” she said, grabbing Tessa’s arm with an intensity that startled her. “They want to hear from you about your father’s claims. They’re worried about liability.”
Panic flared in Tessa’s gut. She exchanged a quick glance with Callum, the weight of the board’s scrutiny looming like a storm cloud. “We can’t just walk in and say, ‘Hey, we have a problem,’” she replied, her voice trembling slightly.
Callum took a step closer, lowering his voice as he leaned in. “I’ll back you up. But we need to present a united front. If we fake an engagement, it will deflect attention from the real threat. We can work together to find the evidence we need.”
The absurdity of his proposition hung in the air, a mix of desperation and practicality. They were trapped in this web of chaos, and now they had to trust each other. “What’s your angle, Callum?” Tessa narrowed her eyes, skepticism hardening her resolve.
“Survival. If we don’t act fast, more than your father’s future is at stake.” His voice was steady, but the urgency in his eyes betrayed the gravity of the situation.
A knot settled in Tessa’s stomach as the implications washed over her. This fragile alliance could either forge a bond or shatter under the pressure rapidly building around them. “Fine,” she finally said, her voice a whisper of defiance. “Let’s play it your way.”
They stepped out of the triage room, the chaos of the ER swallowing them once more. Callum moved with purpose, guiding her through the crowd. Tessa’s mind raced, the weight of their plan heavy on her shoulders. She couldn’t shake the sensation that their tenuous link was just the beginning of something far more dangerous.
“Wait,” she said, pulling him back as they approached the boardroom door. “What if they see through our act? What if they don’t believe us?”
Callum paused, his gaze steady on hers. “Then we’ll make them believe. We’re in this together, Tessa. Trust me.”
His words resonated with an unexpected warmth, but the fear still gnawed at her insides. “I don’t like this,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Neither do I,” he replied, his expression softening for a moment. “But we don’t have a choice.”
Just then, the door swung open, revealing the board members seated around a polished table, their expressions a mix of concern and skepticism. Tessa’s heart raced as she crossed the threshold, Callum at her side like a storm cloud ready to unleash.
“Thank you for coming on such short notice,” the board chair said, his gaze slicing between them. “We need to discuss your father’s claims immediately.”
Tessa swallowed hard, adrenaline surging through her veins. “We,”
Before she could finish, a loud crash echoed from the hallway, followed by frantic shouts. The board members exchanged alarmed glances, and Tessa felt the air thicken with tension.
“What was that?” one of them asked, standing up.
Callum’s grip tightened on Tessa’s arm, his eyes darting toward the door. “Stay here,” he said, his voice low and firm. “I’ll check it out.”
But before he could take a step, the lights flickered and then dimmed, plunging the room into a momentary darkness. Tessa’s breath hitched as she sensed movement in the shadows, a chilling realization creeping over her, this was no accident.
As the lights flickered back on, Callum’s face was set in determination, but the expression in his eyes hinted at the danger looming just outside. Tessa’s heart raced as she braced herself for what was about to unfold.
The boardroom door opened before either of them moved. Dr. Sloane Mercer stood there with a transfer form bearing Tessa's signature.
"You are late," Sloane said.
Tessa took the paper. "The time stamp is tomorrow."
Callum's expression hardened. "Then someone is writing the future for us."
Tessa turned to the cameras. "Good. Let them record who objects when we read it aloud."
She and Callum entered together, their false engagement now the only barrier between the chart and the people trying to erase it.
