Chapter 12
What the Cameras Missed
Tessa had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. The sterile air of Ward Seven at St. Ormond buzzed with the muted urgency of medical staff rushing by, their clipboards clutched like shields against uncertainty. Tessa stood in the shadows, her heart thudding in rhythm with the rapid clicks of keyboards and the low hum of fluorescent lights. The official story had settled around them too quickly, like a heavy fog, suffocating and deceptive. She could feel the edges of that fog every time someone skirted a direct question, their eyes darting away as if avoiding a hidden truth.
Callum stood beside her, close enough for their shoulders to brush, yet his restraint was palpable. He didn’t touch her, and that mattered. It gave Tessa the space to choose the distance between them. The tension between them was tight, fraught with unspoken words and unresolved feelings.
"They recover hidden evidence through the setting's concrete details," Tessa whispered, her voice low enough to avoid drawing attention.
Callum's gaze sharpened, his brow furrowing slightly. "Then we make them show us where it leads."
They moved together through the dimly lit corridor, focusing on the details others had dismissed. A time stamp on a logbook, an access card misplaced in a pocket, a line in a medical chart that didn’t match the attending nurse’s handwriting. Each piece of information felt like a breadcrumb, leading them deeper into a forest of deception. Arthur had warned Tessa that the truth would not arrive as a confession; it would come as something ordinary, something everyone overlooked.
As the door to the video monitoring room swung open, a wave of dread washed over her. Inside, screens flickered with images of the hospital's corridors, but one face stood out—one she recognized all too well. The cost of being right settled heavily in her chest. This proof could save them, but it could also drag their loved ones into danger, into the very line of fire they were trying to escape.
Callum must have sensed her hesitation; he stepped closer, his hand settling at the small of Tessa's back, warmth seeping through the layers of her clothes. But then he withdrew, leaving the warmth lingering, taut between them. "Tell me what you need," he said, his voice steady, though his eyes betrayed a flicker of concern.
For the first time since the disaster began, Tessa stood at a crossroads, her mind racing. She didn’t have a plan; she didn’t know what to do next. She looked up at him, taking in the determination etched in his features, the way his jaw clenched with resolve. In that moment, she saw the control he was willing to give up for her, and it struck a chord deep within her. The only honest choice available was to keep moving with him, to trust him.
"Let’s see the footage," she finally said, her voice firmer now, reclaiming some of the agency she felt slipping away.
Callum nodded, his expression shifting to one of fierce focus as they entered the room. The air was thick with tension, and Tessa felt it coil around her like a serpent. The screen flickered to life, illuminating the dim room in soft blue light. They scanned the footage, eyes darting from one frame to the next, searching for anything out of place.
Then, there it was—a flash of movement caught in the corner of the screen. Tessa leaned in, her breath hitching as she recognized the figure. "That’s him," she said, voice barely above a whisper. "That’s the one from the gala."
The man appeared unassuming, blending into the crowd, but Tessa knew better. She’d seen the way he interacted with the others, the glances he exchanged, the way he slipped out of sight just when things turned chaotic. "He’s not just a guest," she murmured, her heart racing. "He’s involved."
Callum’s eyes narrowed, and he leaned closer to the screen, scanning the timestamp. "We need to find out where he goes from here," he said, his tone edged with urgency.
Before Tessa could respond, the door behind them creaked open, and a voice cut through the charged atmosphere. "You two shouldn’t be in here."
They spun around to find a nurse standing in the doorway, her expression a mix of surprise and suspicion. Tessa's heart sank, adrenaline surging as she recognized the authority in the woman’s stance. This was no ordinary nurse; there was something more behind her eyes.
"We’re just—" Tessa started, but the nurse held up a hand, silencing her.
"Leave now, or I’ll have to report you," she said, her voice low but firm.
Panic flooded Tessa, but Callum stepped forward, his presence solid and unwavering. "We’re investigating something important," he said, his voice steady as he met the nurse's gaze. "Please, just give us a moment."
But the nurse’s eyes darted to the screen, her expression shifting from suspicion to alarm. "You don’t understand," she said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You need to get out of here. Now."
Tessa felt a chill run down her spine as the weight of her words sank in. The stakes were higher than they had realized. Just as she opened her mouth to ask why, the lights flickered overhead, casting shadows that danced on the walls.
Then, without warning, the power cut out, plunging them into darkness. Tessa's heart raced, her breath quickening. She could sense Callum beside her, tense and alert.
“Stay close,” he whispered, and she nodded, fear gripping her as she felt the pull of impending danger. The darkness felt alive, and in that suffocating silence, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were racing against time.
And then she heard it—a faint sound, echoing through the hallway, a whisper of footsteps approaching fast.
