The Ward Seven Promise

Ch. 13 - The Kiss Interrupted

Chapter 13

The Kiss Interrupted

Tessa had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. In Ward Seven at St. Ormond, the sterile scent of antiseptic mixed with the faint aroma of coffee from a distant break room. Staff moved with purpose, carrying clipboards and phones, their faces set in grim determination. The official story had settled around them too quickly—an uneasy blanket of certainty. Tessa felt its edges scrape against her with every sidelong glance, every evasive answer.

Callum stood beside her, close enough that their shoulders brushed, the warmth of his presence both comforting and electrifying. He didn’t touch her, and that distance mattered. It gave Tessa space to breathe, to think, and to grapple with the tension hanging between them.

“An almost-kiss or first kiss is interrupted by a direct threat,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, the words laced with reluctance.

“Then we make them show us where it leads,” Callum replied, his gaze steady, unwavering. The determination in his voice sent a shiver through her.

They focused on the detail that everyone else had dismissed: a time stamp on the medical records, an access card found tucked away in a drawer, a suspicious line in a chart that seemed out of place. Arthur had warned Tessa that the truth wouldn’t come as a confession; it would emerge as a thing someone had tried too hard to make ordinary, a smokescreen.

As the next door clicked open, Tessa felt a ripple of dread. This was the moment when being right could cost them dearly. The evidence they sought could either illuminate the shadows or cast their loved ones into the line of fire. Callum’s expression shifted as he sensed her anxiety. His hand found the small of her back, warm and reassuring, before he let it linger, still and unyielding.

“Tell me what you need,” he said, his voice low but firm, a promise nestled in the urgency.

For the first time since the chaos began, Tessa hesitated. She searched his eyes, seeing the control he was offering up, the hope mingled with fear. The weight of her decision pressed heavily on her chest. She could formulate a plan, outline their next steps, but instead, she made a choice that felt raw and real: she reached for him, letting her fingers brush against his arm as she stepped forward.

“We keep moving,” she said, her resolve firming with each syllable.

The atmosphere thickened with tension as they entered the corridor, fluorescent lights flickering overhead. A chart of patient names hung on the wall, a stark reminder of what was at stake. Tessa glanced at the names, each one a potential victim of whatever dark truth lay hidden in the ward. She shivered, wrapping her arms around herself.

The air was heavy, and each footfall echoed in the silence. Callum’s presence was a steadying force, but she could sense his own turmoil beneath the surface.

“Did you hear that?” he whispered suddenly, tilting his head toward a door at the far end of the hall.

Tessa strained to listen, her heart racing. A loud thud followed by hushed voices floated through the air, a conversation just beyond their reach.

“Sounds like trouble,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Or a distraction,” Callum replied, his eyes narrowing in focus. “We need to decide if we investigate or continue with our lead.”

Tessa took a deep breath, weighing their options. “We can’t take our eyes off the goal. We have to find the truth first.”

Just as she finished speaking, a sharp knock reverberated through the corridor, followed by the unmistakable sound of someone drawing a bolt. Tessa’s pulse quickened.

“Get ready,” Callum commanded, his voice low and intense.

The door creaked open slowly, revealing a figure cloaked in shadow, their features obscured. Tessa instinctively stepped closer to Callum, her body tense, ready for anything.

“Who’s there?” Callum demanded, his voice steady but edged with urgency.

The figure paused, and Tessa could see a glimmer of recognition in their eyes. “You shouldn’t be here,” they said, their voice hoarse.

Tessa’s heart plummeted. “We’re not leaving until we get answers,” she said, her voice unwavering despite the fear clenching her stomach.

Silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken truths. The figure shifted, and in that moment, Tessa understood the stakes were higher than she’d ever imagined.

“Then you need to know,” the figure said, their voice dropping to a whisper. “They’re coming for you.”

The words hung in the air, a chilling promise, as the door began to close, sealing off their chance for clarity. Tessa’s breath caught in her throat, and she turned to Callum, their eyes locking in a shared panic.

“Callum,” she breathed, the gravity of their situation crashing down around them.

Before she could say more, the door slammed shut, leaving them in the dim light of the corridor, uncertainty looming like a storm cloud ready to break.
