The Ward Seven Promise

Ch. 14 - No Safe Way Home

Chapter 14

No Safe Way Home

Tessa had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. In Ward Seven at St. Ormond, the air hummed with a frenetic energy. Nurses and orderlies swept by, their faces tight with purpose, clutching clipboards and phones, each one clinging to the same narrative. The official story had settled around them too quickly, a brittle veneer over something more sinister. Tessa could feel its edges every time someone dodged a direct question, their eyes flickering away like frightened birds.

Beside her, Callum stood rigid, his presence both a comfort and a reminder of their shared burden. He didn’t touch her at first, respecting the space that she needed. That restraint mattered—a silent acknowledgment that the distance was hers to navigate. His dark eyes were intent, scanning the chaos around them, and Tessa felt a familiar twist of anxiety knotting in her stomach.

"A loved one is taken, harmed, or coerced; the protagonist chooses action over escape," she murmured, keeping her voice low enough to avoid drawing attention. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered, casting a harsh glow on the sterile white walls.

Callum’s lips pressed into a thin line. "Then we make them show us where it leads," he replied, a steely resolve in his tone.

They moved through the ward, shadows slipping between the bright lights and hurried footsteps. Other staff members dismissed the details they were pursuing: a time stamp on a patient record, a misplaced access card in the wrong hands, a line in a medical chart that didn’t match the doctor who had logged it. Each clue was a thread woven into a tapestry of something darker. Arthur had warned Tessa that the truth wouldn’t arrive as a neat confession; it would come to them in fragments, disguised as the mundane.

When the next door swung open, the sterile scent of antiseptic hit her like a wave. Tessa's heart raced as she stepped inside, her instincts screaming that this was where it would begin or end. The proof could save them, but it could also pull their loved ones into the same line of fire. She glanced at Callum, who caught her gaze, his expression a mix of concern and determination. His hand found the small of her back, warm through the thin fabric of her shirt, but then he let it linger just a moment before it went still.

"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice a low rumble in the tense atmosphere of the ward.

For the first time since everything had spiraled out of control, Tessa hesitated. She looked into his eyes, seeing the control he was willingly relinquishing. It was an unspoken pact, a moment that felt weighty with the gravity of their situation. She wanted to say something, to devise a plan, but the words caught in her throat. Instead, she made the only honest choice available: to keep moving with him, to trust that they would find their way together.

The voice on the line crackled as Tessa answered the phone, the tinny sound a reminder of the stakes at play. “This is Tessa. I’m ready,” she said, her pulse quickening.

A pause on the other end, then a familiar voice—Renee, the nurse who had been with them through the initial chaos. “They’re in Room 712. I can hear them; they’re not alone. You need to hurry, Tessa.”

The urgency in Renee’s voice sent a chill down her spine. “Is it… is it him?”

“Get there now. I can’t—” The line went dead.

“Callum!” Tessa’s heart raced as she turned to him, adrenaline sparking in her veins. “We have to go. Now.”

They rushed down the stark corridor, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead like angry bees. Tessa’s mind raced with scenarios—what they might find, what they might have to do. Each step felt heavier than the last as dread settled in her chest.

“Do you think it’s a trap?” Callum asked, his voice a steady anchor amid the chaos.

“Maybe,” Tessa admitted, her throat tightening. “But we can’t leave them.”

As they approached Room 712, the door loomed before them, a barrier between the known and the unknown. Tessa paused, her hand hovering over the doorknob. “Whatever happens, we stick together.”

Callum nodded, his expression resolute. “Always.”

Taking a deep breath, she turned the knob and pushed the door open, the hinges creaking ominously. The sight that met them was more than they had prepared for, and the air thickened with fear. Tessa’s heart plummeted as she stepped inside, the darkness swallowing them whole.

Then the door slammed shut behind them, locking them in.
