The Ward Seven Promise

Ch. 9 - Close Enough to Hear Him Breathe

Chapter 9

Close Enough to Hear Him Breathe

Tessa had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. Ward Seven at St. Ormond hummed with a frenetic energy. Nurses rushed past with purpose, carrying clipboards and phones, their expressions masked by a veneer of calm. The official story had settled around them too quickly, like fog, obscuring the truth. Tessa felt its weight pressing down every time someone deflected a question with a rehearsed smile or a vague shrug.

Callum stood beside her, close enough that their shoulders brushed. The warmth of his presence grounded her, yet he kept his hands at his sides, giving her space. That restraint mattered. It allowed Tessa to navigate the tension simmering between them without the guise of nonchalance.

“The leads make a risky investigation move and share an escalating physical moment,” Tessa murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, filled with urgency.

“Then we make them show us where it leads,” Callum replied, his gaze sharp as he scanned the bustling hallway.

They were hunting for details others had overlooked: a time stamp on a report, a misplaced access card, a line in a patient chart that didn’t align with the attending physician. Arthur had warned Tessa that the truth wouldn’t come wrapped in a neat confession. It would emerge as something someone had tried too hard to make appear ordinary—a slight miscalculation, a slip of the tongue.

As the door at the end of the hall swung open, Tessa’s heart raced. She understood the cost of being right. The proof they sought could save them, but it could also thrust their loved ones into the crosshairs of a dangerous game. Callum, attuned to her unease, shifted closer, his hand brushing against the small of her back. The heat of his touch sent a shiver through her, but he let it linger for just a moment before pulling back, respecting the boundary she hadn’t yet defined.

“Tell me what you need,” he said, his voice low but steady.

For the first time since the chaos erupted, Tessa couldn’t respond with a plan. She looked into his eyes, searching for the strength he offered and recognizing the control he was relinquishing. In that moment, the weight of their situation settled between them, heavy yet undeniable. She made the only honest choice available: to keep moving forward with him.

Just as Tessa opened her mouth to speak, Callum’s phone buzzed between them, lighting up the dim hallway with a single word: RUN.

Instinct kicked in. Tessa grabbed Callum’s arm, her pulse racing. “What does that mean?”

Before he could answer, the sounds of hurried footsteps echoed around them. Tessa glanced over her shoulder, spotting two men in white coats hurrying toward them, their expressions tense and urgent.

“Now!” Callum urged, and they bolted down the corridor, weaving through the throngs of hospital staff. The antiseptic smell of the place clung to her, mingling with the rising panic in her chest.

“Where do we go?” she shouted, her breath coming in quick gasps.

“Break room,” Callum said, his voice steady despite the chaos. “We can regroup there.”

They turned a sharp corner, and Tessa pushed through the door of the break room, a small sanctuary filled with worn furniture and the faint scent of stale coffee. Callum followed, shutting the door behind them with a soft click that felt too loud in the silence.

“Do we have time?” she asked, her heart racing as she glanced at the flimsy lock.

“Just a minute. We need to figure out what we found,” Callum replied, his eyes scanning the room for anything useful.

Tessa paced, the adrenaline coursing through her veins. “We have that time stamp. It’s got to connect to something they’re trying to hide.”

Callum nodded, his brow furrowed in concentration. “But if we’re right about the access card, it means someone inside is covering for them.”

The weight of his words settled heavily between them. Tessa felt the reality of their situation pressing down like the thick air before a storm. “What if we’re wrong? What if we expose ourselves?”

Callum stepped closer, his expression resolute. “Then we’ll face it together. We can’t sit back and let this go unchecked.”

Suddenly, the door rattled, the sound of footsteps echoing outside. Tessa’s heart sank. They were here.

“Hide,” Callum whispered urgently, pushing her behind a stack of plastic crates in the corner. He positioned himself near the door, his body tense, ready to confront whoever came through.

Tessa held her breath, the world narrowing to the sound of her heartbeat. The footsteps grew louder, and a voice she recognized pierced through the tension. “They have to be in here.”

She exchanged a terrified glance with Callum, realizing the gravity of their predicament. Whatever lay ahead, they were about to discover just how deep the conspiracy ran. The door swung open, and in that moment, Tessa’s pulse quickened with dread as she prepared for the confrontation that awaited them.
