The Wedding Clause
Chapter 1
Cold Feet
The church bells echoed through the air, their jubilant tones clashing with the frantic whispers of the guests. Nora Bell stood at the back of the floral-laden sanctuary, her heart racing like a runaway train. Just moments ago, her sister Ivy had dashed out, her white gown billowing behind her like a specter fleeing from a haunting.
Nora’s phone buzzed violently in her clutch, a jarring reminder of the chaos unfurling. She glanced at the screen, her mother Dr. Lena Bell’s name illuminating the message: “Where’s Ivy? It’s time!” Panic clawed at Nora’s chest. This wasn’t just any wedding; it was Ivy’s chance to break free from their mother’s relentless grip. But the stakes were higher now: Julian Ashcroft needed to marry to secure his family’s trust. Without Ivy, he could lose everything.
At the altar, Julian stood poised, his expression a mask of confusion and impatience. Nora caught his eye, and in that moment, she sensed an unspoken plea,he needed her help. There was no room for doubt now; she had to fix this.
“Where is she?” Julian’s voice was low but urgent, cutting through the murmurs of discontent that rippled through the congregation.
Nora stepped forward, her breath hitching. “I don’t know. She just… left.”
He raked a hand through his tousled hair, frustration radiating off him. “I can’t afford this. My aunt Celia will have my head if I don’t marry today.”
A flicker of determination ignited within her. “Then what if… we went through with it anyway? A substitute wedding. Just until we find Ivy.”
Julian’s brow furrowed, skepticism etched on his face. “Not a chance. It’s not that simple.”
“Actually, it is.” Nora stepped closer, adrenaline surging through her veins. “You need a bride, and I can’t let Ivy be the reason you lose everything. We’ll figure it out together.”
He weighed her words, his eyes narrowing as the guests whispered in confusion, the tension palpable. Finally, with a reluctant nod, he agreed. “Fine. But this doesn’t mean I trust you.”
The air between them crackled with unspoken emotions,an electric tension that felt both thrilling and terrifying. As they turned toward the expectant crowd, Nora felt the heavy weight of Ivy’s absence pressing down on her. What should have been a joyous celebration was morphing into a personal crisis, and they were both ensnared in a web of familial expectations, bound together by circumstance and deception.
“Alright,” Julian said, his voice low as they approached the altar together. “We can do this. Just follow my lead.”
Nora nodded, her pulse quickening. She glanced over at the crowd, their faces a mix of confusion and curiosity. “What do we tell them?”
“Just say we’re moving forward,” he replied, his gaze scanning the throng. “We’ll buy time until we find Ivy. Remember, we’re in this together.”
As the officiant cleared his throat and the crowd quieted, Nora felt her heart thud in her chest. She cast a quick glance at Julian, who stood beside her, his presence both comforting and unnerving. The weight of their deception hung heavy in the air as they faced the guests.
“Dearly beloved,” the officiant began, his voice warm yet formal, “we gather here today to join Julian Ashcroft and Ivy Bell in holy matrimony.”
Nora’s stomach twisted. The name hung in the air, a reminder of Ivy’s absence. She shot Julian a glance, and he caught her eye, a flash of urgency passing between them.
“Actually,” Julian interjected, his voice firm yet steady, “Ivy can’t be here right now. But I’m still committed to this marriage, and I have someone who will stand in for her until Ivy returns.”
A murmur rippled through the crowd, filled with disbelief and intrigue. Nora’s heart raced; she could almost feel the weight of their expectations pressing down on her shoulders.
The officiant hesitated, glancing between them. “That’s highly unconventional, but if both parties agree…”
“We do,” Julian said, his tone resolute.
Nora nodded, her throat dry. “We do.”
A low hum of chatter erupted among the guests, but Julian’s intense gaze held her steady. “We’ll keep it simple,” he whispered, leaning in close, his breath warm against her ear. “Just get through the vows, and we can figure out the rest later.”
Nora swallowed hard, aware of the stakes. The truth lay just beneath the surface, a fragile thread waiting to unravel. She steeled herself, their fingers brushing lightly as they faced the officiant together.
As the ceremony continued, Nora’s thoughts raced, full of doubts and questions. What if Ivy didn’t return? What if this deception cost them both more than they realized?
The officiant’s voice faded in and out, and she felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead.
“Do you, Julian Ashcroft, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?”
Nora’s heart thundered as she prepared to answer, but before she could speak, a loud crash echoed from the back of the church. Everyone turned, eyes wide with shock, and Nora’s breath caught in her throat.
Ivy stood there, breathless and wild-eyed, her gown stained and torn, a whirlwind of chaos. “What have you done?” she gasped, and in that moment, the world tilted on its axis.
Nora Bell had spent ten years preventing other people's weddings from collapsing. She caught the falling bouquet, moved a drunk uncle away from the cake, and memorized every emergency exit. None of that prepared her for Ivy arriving with a torn veil and Julian Ashcroft's aunt ordering the doors locked.
"Where is your marriage certificate?" Celia demanded.
"With the bride," Nora answered.
"The bride is missing."
Julian stepped beside Nora, his expression controlled enough to frighten her. The board vote was scheduled for noon. His family trust required a married heir, and Ivy's disappearance had turned a private crisis into a public weapon.
"We need ten minutes," Julian said.
"You have three," Celia replied. "After that, the board appoints a replacement."
Nora found a second envelope hidden in Ivy's emergency kit. It contained a debt agreement bearing their mother's signatures. The amount was impossible, the witness line forged, and the clause at the bottom made Nora personally liable if Ivy failed to marry Julian.
"They planned to use me as the guarantor," she said.
Julian read the page. "Then we give them a different guarantee."
"No."
"You have not heard the proposal."
"I know your family."
He held out his hand, not touching her. "Stand beside me for one public ceremony. We make them believe the trust condition is satisfied while we find Ivy and expose the forgery."
Nora looked toward the locked doors, then at the debt clause that could ruin her sister. She placed the envelope in her pocket and took Julian's hand.
"One ceremony," she said. "One investigation. If you lie to me, I walk."
Julian's grip tightened once. "If I lie, you will not need to walk. You will be the person who exposes me."
The chapel doors opened. Cameras flooded the aisle, and Nora stepped forward wearing a ring that had been meant for her sister.
The officiant raised his folder. Nora saw that the marriage license inside carried Ivy's name. Julian noticed at the same moment.
"We cannot sign this," he whispered.
"Then we make them wait while we find the replacement."
Celia moved toward the microphone. Nora lifted her planner and announced that the ceremony would pause for a legal review. The cameras turned to her, and the board members began shouting.
Julian stood beside her. "My temporary wife has spoken."
Nora held his gaze. "Temporary is the only part I trust."
Behind the curtains, Ivy's emergency phone began to ring.
