The Wedding Clause

Ch. 2 - An Unholy Pact

Chapter 2

An Unholy Pact

The moment Nora stepped to Julian's side, the congregation buzzed with confusion. His crisp navy suit stood in stark contrast to her fitted black dress, a grim uniform for an unforeseen circumstance. “Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian called out, his voice steady yet strained, “I’d like to introduce my bride for today, Nora Bell.”

A collective gasp rippled through the attendees. Nora shot him a bewildered glance, her pulse quickening at the absurdity of it all. “You couldn’t just say ‘substitute’? Do we need to play the part?” she whispered, keeping her expression neutral as the eyes of the crowd bore down on them.

“Play it well,” Julian murmured back, tension etched in the lines of his forehead. “Or they’ll sniff out the truth.”

The ceremony unfolded like a fast-paced thriller, with vows hastily rewritten in hushed tones between them. Nora repeated the words mechanically, her focus drifting to the urgent undertones of their situation. Ivy was missing, the wedding was a facade, and every passing moment amplified the pressure in her chest.

After the vows, the reception blossomed into a scripted farce. Nora navigated through an endless line of well-meaning guests eager to congratulate the new couple. Each smile felt like a dagger, a reminder that they were two people pretending in a world that demanded authenticity. She forced her own smile, nodding as she accepted their warm wishes, her stomach churning with anxiety.

“Thank you for this,” Julian murmured as they finally found a moment’s reprieve behind the bar. He poured himself a whiskey, his hands slightly trembling. “I know this isn’t what you signed up for.”

“You’re not the one losing a sister today,” she shot back, her voice barely above a whisper as she leaned against the cool marble countertop. “We need to figure out what happened.”

Julian’s gaze darkened, an edge of frustration lacing his features. “I can’t just abandon this,” he said, gesturing toward the bustling reception. “Celia’s already on edge. If she senses something’s off…”

Just then, Mateo Ruiz, Julian's best man, approached, a frown creasing his brow. “Celia’s breathing down my neck, Julian. She expects a proper announcement.”

“Tell her it’s a temporary arrangement,” Julian replied curtly, but the tension threading his voice was palpable.

As Mateo walked away, Nora felt a chill run down her spine. This wasn’t just about a wedding,it was about trust, loyalty, and a family in turmoil. She could sense Julian’s frustration, but beneath it all lay a flicker of desperation. They needed to uncover the truth behind Ivy’s disappearance before Celia’s machinations turned their fragile alliance into a battleground.

“Maybe we should…” Nora started, but a sudden commotion erupted near the entrance. A group of guests gasped, eyes darting towards a figure stepping through the door.

“Is that Celia?” Julian asked, his voice low, panic flickering in his eyes.

Nora turned to see Celia, Julian’s mother, striding in with an air of authority. Her perfectly coiffed hair and tailored dress screamed power, and Nora felt herself shrink back, instinctively seeking the safety of Julian’s side.

“Julian!” Celia called, her voice slicing through the chatter. “We need to talk. Now.”

Julian’s throat tightened as he exchanged a glance with Nora. “We’ll be right there,” he said, but his tone lacked conviction.

Nora’s heart raced, each beat echoing the urgency of their situation. “We don’t have time for this,” she urged, her voice low and frantic. “What if Ivy,”

Suddenly, her phone buzzed again. She fished it out of her clutch, her breath hitching as she read the message from Ivy: “I’m safe. But there’s something you don’t know.”

“What?” Julian leaned closer, his eyes locked on her face, a mixture of concern and curiosity shadowing his features.

Nora’s heart raced faster, the weight of the message crashing down on her. “Ivy… she’s safe, but what could she mean? What don’t we know?”

Julian’s expression shifted, the flicker of hope in his eyes replaced by a dawning realization. “We need to find her. Now.”

The noise of the reception faded into the background as Nora processed the implications of Ivy’s words. The secrets were starting to unravel, and all she could think was, what if they were tied to something much darker than a runaway bride?

Before she could voice her fears, the room's atmosphere shifted. A shadow fell over them, and Nora turned to see Celia standing just a few feet away, her eyes piercing through the crowd. “Julian, are you ready?” she asked, her voice deceptively sweet yet laced with an edge.

Julian inhaled sharply, and Nora’s stomach dropped. The fragile facade they had built was teetering on the brink, and in that moment, she knew they were running out of time.

The cost of the substitute wedding arrived in the first question from the board. "Where is Ivy Bell?" a director asked.

Nora kept her smile fixed. "Safe."

Julian answered at the same time. "Unavailable."

The mismatch moved through the room like a spark. Celia's attorney placed the forged debt agreement on the table and claimed Nora had confessed to authorizing it. The signature looked close enough to pass until Nora noticed the ink had been printed, not pressed.

"That document was created after midnight," she said. "The hotel printer logs every job."

"You are a planner, not an auditor," Celia replied.

"I am the person who keeps your events from becoming evidence."

Julian led her through a service corridor before the board could vote. Their hands remained linked for the cameras, then separated when the door shut.

"You could have warned me about the document," Nora said.

"I saw it five minutes ago."

"Then your family is faster than you are."

He gave her a key to the hotel archive. "The original debt file is there. If we find the witness page, we can prove the clause was added later."

The archive clerk refused them until Julian signed a liability form. Nora noticed the clerk's cuff carried the same blue thread as the envelope in Ivy's kit. Someone had moved between the wedding suite and the records room.

Inside, they found the printer queue cleared and one file still warm in the tray. The document named Nora as guarantor and listed an address where Ivy had never lived.

Julian's voice dropped. "That address belongs to my aunt's private villa."

Nora folded the page. "Then that is where we start."

Before they could leave, Julian's phone lit with a message from Ivy: Do not trust the man beside you. He knows why I ran.

Nora read the message again. Julian did not reach for the phone.

"Ask me," he said.

"Why did Ivy run?"

"Because Celia told her the trust would fail if she refused the debt clause. I tried to delay the vote, but my aunt moved first."

The honesty cost him. Nora kept the message between them like a blade.

"We find Ivy before noon," she said. "Then we decide whether this marriage ends."

Julian nodded. They left the archive with the original file hidden beneath Nora's planner, while hotel cameras followed every step. Nora counted the cameras and remembered each angle. She also marked the blind spots on her phone for safety.
