Ch. 12 - What the Cameras Missed

Chapter 12

What the Cameras Missed

Nora had learned that a crisis became most dangerous when everyone thought they understood it. In the cathedral's shadow, the Ashcroft hotel boardroom buzzed with frantic energy. People moved purposefully, clutching clipboards, phones, and other instruments of a fabricated calm. The official narrative had settled around them like a thick fog—everyone was pretending to know the truth, but Nora could feel the tension lurking just beneath the surface, especially when someone deflected a direct question with practiced ease.

Julian stood beside her, close enough for the onlookers to perceive them as a unit. He kept his hands at his sides, a conscious restraint that Nora appreciated. It offered her the rare opportunity to dictate the space between them, allowing her to confront the reality of their situation without the distraction of physical connection.

"They recover hidden evidence through the setting's concrete details," Nora whispered, her voice barely above the low hum of conversation.

Julian nodded, his brow furrowing slightly as he processed her words. "Then we make them show us where it leads."

They focused on the details others had overlooked: a time stamp that didn’t align, a misplaced access card, a line in a chart that contradicted the author’s identity. Ivy had warned Nora that the truth wouldn’t present itself neatly; it would emerge from the shadows, disguised as something ordinary yet dangerously deceptive.

As the door creaked open, Nora felt an icy knot form in her stomach. She understood the price of being right. The evidence they sought could save their lives—or it could drag everyone they cared about into the line of fire. Julian's expression shifted; he sensed her hesitation. His hand found the small of her back, warm against the fabric of her blouse, but it remained still, a reminder of the weight of their choices.

"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice steady, though a flicker of concern danced in his eyes.

Nora’s heart raced. For the first time since the disaster had begun, she didn’t respond with a plan. Instead, she met his gaze, taking in the control he was offering her. It was an unspoken promise, a commitment to navigate this chaos together. She made the only honest choice available: to keep moving with him.

The room was dim, lit by flickering fluorescent lights that hummed softly overhead. Nora stepped toward the screen at the front of the room, where the footage had just paused on a face she recognized all too well. Her breath caught in her throat as she processed the implications.

"Is that—?" Julian’s voice trailed off, his eyes widening.

"Yes," she confirmed, her pulse quickening as she pointed. "That’s Marcus. He was at the gala."

The image showed Marcus, his expression unreadable as he spoke to someone off-screen. Nora’s mind raced, recalling the jovial facade he’d worn during the charity event, hiding the tension beneath. She could almost hear his laughter echoing, the way he’d charmed the crowd while keeping secrets tucked away like stray confetti.

Julian leaned closer, his shoulder brushing against hers, igniting an electric pulse that sent her heart into overdrive. "We need to know who he’s talking to. Do we have access to the rest of the footage?"

Nora bit her lip, torn between the urgency of the moment and the risk of revealing too much to the others in the room. "We might. But we can't let anyone else see this yet. If they know we’re onto something, we’ll lose our chance."

Julian nodded, his jaw tightening in determination. "Then let’s find a way to access it without arousing suspicion."

They exchanged a glance laden with unspoken understanding. Nora felt the weight of their shared mission, the urgency that drove them deeper into the unknown, and the unshakeable bond that had formed between them in the midst of chaos.

Just as they turned to make their exit, the heavy door swung open again, and a tall figure stepped inside. It was Ivy, her expression a mix of urgency and fear. "Nora, Julian, we need to talk. Now."

Nora’s stomach dropped. Ivy’s presence here was a warning, a crack in their fragile cover. "What’s happened?" she asked, already bracing for the worst.

Ivy glanced over her shoulder, her eyes darting nervously. "It’s Marcus. He’s not just at the gala. He’s involved in something much bigger, and if we don’t act fast—"

A sudden crash echoed from down the hall, cutting Ivy off. The sound reverberated through the room like a gunshot, and Nora felt her heart stutter. They were out of time.

"Run," Julian said, urgency propelling his words. Without a second thought, he grabbed Nora’s hand and pulled her toward the exit, her pulse racing as they fled into the unknown.
