Ch. 7 - The Room Prepared for Her

Chapter 7

The Room Prepared for Her

Nora had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. Inside the grand cathedral, the air was thick with tension. The high ceilings echoed the murmurs of anxious voices, while the stained glass windows cast fractured light on the faces of those gathered. In the Ashcroft hotel boardroom, people moved with a sense of urgency, clutching clipboards and phones, weaving through the room like workers in a hive, all buzzing with their version of the same carefully crafted lie. The official story had settled around them too quickly, wrapping like a shroud. Nora could feel its weight every time someone skirted a direct question, their eyes darting away, as if the truth were a thing to be avoided.

Julian stood beside her, his presence a steady anchor in the chaos. He was close enough that they could have been a single entity, but he didn’t touch her. That restraint mattered to Nora; it allowed her to grapple with the tension between them without the distraction of physical contact. It was a choice, and for the first time in days, she felt the possibility of control in a world spinning out of it.

“They enter an antagonist-controlled space and find a prepared trap,” she whispered, her voice low and urgent, cutting through the noise of the room.

“Then we make them show us where it leads,” Julian replied, his dark eyes narrowing with determination.

They had picked apart the details everyone else had overlooked: a time stamp on an email, a misplaced access card, and a line in a chart that didn’t match the person it was attributed to. Ivy had warned Nora that the truth wouldn’t arrive as a confession; it would come disguised as something ordinary, something overlooked.

As the door to the next room swung open, Nora’s heart raced. She understood the cost of being right. The evidence they sought could save them, but it could also drag their loved ones into a deadly game. Julian sensed her hesitation before she could voice it. His hand found the small of her back, warmth seeping through the fabric of her blouse, but he held it steady, allowing her the space to breathe, to think.

“Tell me what you need,” he said, his voice steady, grounding.

For the first time since everything had spiraled out of control, Nora faltered. She searched his face for the plan she’d rehearsed in her mind, but all she saw was the vulnerability of a man who had chosen to stand beside her. The weight of his trust pressed against her, and in that moment, Nora made the only honest choice available: to keep moving with him.

They stepped inside the next room, the dim light revealing a cluttered desk, papers strewn about like fallen leaves. Nora’s gaze fell on a drawer slightly ajar. She pulled it open, heart pounding as she scanned the contents. And there it was—a file marked with her name, red flags flaring in her mind. The trap had been built for her, not for the event.

“Julian,” she breathed, excitement and dread mixing in her veins. She pulled out the file, flipping it open to reveal a series of photographs—images from the planning stages, documents detailing every move they’d made leading up to the gala. The implications were staggering.

“This is it,” she whispered, her fingers trembling as she sifted through the evidence. “They were watching us the whole time.”

Julian leaned closer, his breath warm against her ear. “We need to get this to Ivy. She’ll know what to do.”

Nora nodded, adrenaline coursing through her as they moved back towards the door. But as she reached for the handle, a loud crash echoed from the hallway, followed by shouts. The cacophony sent a jolt of fear through her.

“Stay close,” Julian ordered, his voice low but urgent. They pressed against the wall, hearts racing as footsteps thundered nearby.

“What if they find us?” Nora’s voice trembled, the weight of the file in her hands suddenly like a leaden anchor.

Julian’s jaw tightened. “Then we fight. But first, we need to stay hidden.”

They exchanged a brief glance, a silent understanding passing between them. It was more than just survival; it was a promise that they would face whatever came next together. As the footsteps drew closer, Nora felt the chilling realization wash over her—this was only the beginning.

Just then, the door swung open, revealing a shadowy figure silhouetted against the light from the hallway. Panic surged in Nora’s chest as she grasped the file tighter. They had to act, had to decide—stay and fight, or flee with the truth that could save them all.
