Ch. 8 - The Witness Who Looked Away

Chapter 8

The Witness Who Looked Away

Nora stood at the edge of the Ashcroft hotel boardroom, her heart pounding against her ribs like a frantic bird. The cathedral’s spires loomed in the distance, a stark reminder of the chaos unfolding inside. The air was thick with tension, punctuated by the rustle of papers and the soft hum of muted conversations. People moved with purpose, clutching clipboards and phones, as if the weight of their collective understanding could somehow resolve the crisis. But Nora knew better; complacency was the enemy.

Beside her, Julian exuded a calm that both steadied and unsettled her. Dressed in a fitted navy suit, he looked every bit the professional, his dark hair slicked back with an air of authority. He stood close enough for her to feel the heat radiating from him, but he didn’t reach for her. That restraint mattered. It gave her the space to consider their fragile connection amid the turmoil.

"A professional ally gives a clue that points toward a loved one," Nora murmured, her voice low enough that only Julian could hear. She glanced around the room, wary of prying ears.

"Then we make them show us where it leads," he replied, his eyes narrowing with determination.

They honed in on the details others had overlooked—a time stamp on a report, a misplaced access card, an odd line in a chart that revealed a discrepancy. Each piece was a breadcrumb, leading them deeper into the shadows of a truth that felt more dangerous than the crisis itself. Ivy had warned Nora that the truth would not arrive neatly packaged; it would emerge as something someone had tried too hard to hide.

As the next door swung open, the sterile light from the hallway spilled into the room. Nora’s gut twisted. She could almost feel the weight of the evidence they were about to uncover pressing down on her. The proof could save them, but it also risked dragging their loved ones into a perilous situation. Julian’s gaze flickered to her, and he understood her hesitation, his hand resting at the small of her back, warm through the fabric of her blouse. It was a comforting gesture, yet it left her feeling exposed.

"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice steady, laced with concern.

Nora faltered, the words she had rehearsed evaporating into the charged air. For the first time since the disaster began, she was at a loss. She met his eyes, searching for the control he was offering up so freely. In that moment, she made the only honest choice available—she took a step forward, drawing him with her into the uncertainty ahead.

The witness, a wiry man with disheveled hair and a nervous twitch, shifted his gaze from Julian to Nora. "I was told you would not survive this," he said, his voice barely above a whisper, but the weight of his words hung heavy in the air.

Nora felt a chill run down her spine. "What do you mean?" she pressed, her tone sharper than intended.

The man hesitated, glancing around the room as if the walls themselves were listening. “There are people who don’t want this to get out. They will do anything to protect their interests... even if it means silencing you.”

Julian stepped closer, a protective presence. “We’re not afraid of threats. We need the truth.”

The witness swallowed hard, his eyes darting to the door. “You don’t understand. This isn’t just about you. It’s bigger than you can imagine. If you dig too deep, you could put everyone you care about in danger.”

Nora’s heart raced. “What exactly do you know?”

He took a deep breath, his hands trembling. “There’s a connection—something that ties back to the cathedral. You need to see the last entry in the security logs. It could lead you to the answers you’re looking for.”

Julian’s grip tightened on Nora’s arm, a silent exchange of resolve passing between them. They had come too far to turn back now. “Show us,” he demanded, his voice low but firm.

The witness nodded, but uncertainty flickered in his eyes. “You need to understand the risks. The people behind this—” He paused, shuddering. “They’re not just powerful; they’re ruthless.”

Nora felt her pulse quicken, the implications of his words sinking in. “We’re willing to take that risk. Just show us where to go.”

With a deep breath, the man led them down a dimly lit corridor, the fluorescent lights flickering overhead. The sterile white walls closed in around them, amplifying the gravity of their mission. Each step felt heavier than the last, the air thick with unspoken fears. Julian walked beside her, their shoulders brushing, a silent reminder that they were in this together.

As they reached a door marked “Restricted Access,” Nora’s breath caught in her throat. This was the point of no return. The witness paused, his hand hovering over the handle. “You need to be ready for what you find.”

Nora nodded, her heart pounding in sync with Julian’s steady resolve. They were prepared to uncover the truth, no matter the cost. The witness opened the door, revealing a dim room filled with monitors and papers scattered across a desk, the flicker of screens casting eerie shadows.

Julian stepped in first, scanning the area. “Where’s the log?” he asked urgently.

The witness pointed to a computer in the corner, his voice trembling. “There. You’re running out of time.”

Nora felt the weight of the moment pressing down on them. They had crossed a threshold, and there was no turning back. She moved toward the computer, her fingers trembling as she prepared to unveil the secrets hidden within.

Before she could reach it, a loud crash echoed down the hall, and the lights flickered again. Nora’s heart raced as she turned back to Julian, fear etched on his face. “We need to hurry,” he urged.

But just as she reached for the mouse, the door slammed open, and figures in dark suits flooded the room, their faces obscured. Nora’s breath hitched in her throat as she realized the danger they had walked straight into.

“Don’t move!” one of them shouted, a gun glinting in his hand.

The last thing Nora saw was Julian's fierce determination as he stepped in front of her, ready to protect her at all costs. The room felt like it was closing in, and in that moment, she understood the depths of the crisis they faced. The truth was lurking just out of reach, but now it felt like it was slipping away, along with their only chance at survival.
