Chapter 9

Close Enough to Hear Him Breathe

Nora had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. The cathedral’s high arched ceilings echoed the murmurs of the crowd gathered in the Ashcroft Hotel boardroom. Staff moved with clipped efficiency, clutching clipboards and phones, their faces masks of purpose. She could almost see the official story weaving around them like a web, sticky and suffocating. Each time someone sidestepped a direct question, Nora felt the tension coil tighter in her chest.

Beside her, Julian stood close, his presence a silent anchor. He didn’t touch her, a deliberate choice that gave Nora the power to navigate the uncharted waters between them. As she studied him, she could see the shadows of worry etched on his brow, the way his jaw tightened with unspoken thoughts.

"The leads make a risky investigation move and share an escalating physical moment," she murmured, keeping her voice low and steady, barely above the din.

"Then we make them show us where it leads," Julian replied, his eyes scanning the room for signs of trouble.

They honed in on details others had dismissed: a time stamp that contradicted the timeline, a misplaced access card left carelessly on a table, a chart that revealed discrepancies in the data. Ivy had warned Nora that the truth wouldn’t arrive as a confession; it would manifest through something that had been scrutinized too closely, something someone desperately tried to render mundane.

When the next door swung open, Nora felt a chill run down her spine. If they were right—and she was almost certain she was—the proof could save them. But it could just as easily ensnare the people they loved, dragging them into the line of fire. Julian sensed the weight of her thoughts before she spoke. His hand moved instinctively to the small of her back, warmth radiating through the fabric of her blouse, grounding her momentarily before he let it fall away.

"Tell me what you need," he urged, his voice low and steady.

For the first time since the chaos had erupted, Nora hesitated. She searched his eyes, seeing the trust there, the willingness to step into the unknown with her. Instead of outlining a plan, she made the only honest choice available: to keep moving forward with him.

The atmosphere grew electric, and just as she opened her mouth to suggest their next step, Julian’s phone lit up between them. The single word flashed ominously: RUN.

Nora’s heart raced as she glanced around the room, scanning for the source of the urgency. "What… what do you mean?" she stammered, her pulse quickening.

"Something’s happening," Julian said, his voice clipped. He grabbed her hand, a firm grip that ignited a spark of adrenaline within her. "We need to get out of here."

They slipped through the throng, weaving past startled faces and hurried whispers. Nora's mind raced, piecing together the implications of Julian’s message. Could the danger be real, or was it another layer of the elaborate deception they were navigating?

Outside, the evening air hit her with a rush of coolness, a stark contrast to the tension inside. Julian led her down the stone steps of the hotel, his eyes scanning the street as if he could sense the danger lurking just out of sight.

"Where do we go?" Nora asked, her breath hitching in her throat as her anxiety bubbled to the surface.

"To Ivy’s. She needs to know what we found," Julian replied, his tone resolute. "If anyone can help us make sense of this, it’s her."

Just then, a car screeched to a halt at the curb, tires squealing against the asphalt. Nora’s heart sank as she recognized the vehicle—a sleek black sedan that had been following them for days.

"Get down!" Julian shouted, pushing her behind a nearby pillar as a figure stepped out of the car, scanning the street with a predatory intensity.

Nora’s breath quickened, the realization of how deep they were in this tangled web crashing over her like a wave. She could feel Julian’s warmth beside her, a stark reminder that they were in this together, but that didn’t quell the rising fear.

"Stay behind me," he whispered, eyes locked on the man, who was now moving closer, deliberate and dangerous.

Nora nodded, her mind racing with thoughts of what could happen next. She needed to protect Julian, to protect herself, but the stakes had never been higher.

Then, as if sensing their presence, the man turned, eyes narrowing as he spotted them.

"Time’s up," he said, a cruel smile creeping across his face.

In that instant, Nora felt the weight of their choices crashing down. She squeezed Julian's hand tightly, ready to face whatever came next.
