Chapter 100
Final Room Light
The city made the final room light visible at 11:17 exactly.
Not for drama. For procedure.
Elise stood in the annex corridor with Bell, Priya, and Mara and looked at the light.
No one moved.
"Read the final correction," Helen said on speaker.
The line from the court came in three parts:
Owner identity to be disclosed under audit.
Manual override chain to be disclosed.
Witness refusal protections to be restored.
Elise felt the room breathe once.
"That is enough," she said.
Mara gripped her hand and said, "No this is beginning."
Priya held the open record and added one final correction:
Room S is no longer a private witness mechanism.
Bell asked if they should call June.
Elise answered with the first honest line of the night:
I no longer call a missing person. I call the witness route open.
The final room light stayed on for six seconds and then dimmed to gray.
Outside, a reporter asked if this meant they had solved her disappearance.
Elise answered:
Disappearance is not solved by naming one person. It is prevented when systems stop replacing people with process.
The statement spread.
Some called it incomplete. Some called it too legal. Some called it no final proof.
Elise did not need all of them.
At the old stair, she wrote one final note for herself, then for anyone reading later:
If a room can erase a face, keep the route in public light.
If a room can rewrite consent, insist on direct witness identity.
If a room can hide, do not call silence proof.
The unknown source sent no more messages.
At home, Elise placed the three remaining drives, one analog book, and one plain notebook in a steel box and wrote one new label on it:
Not finished. Open.
She sat down at her desk and listened to the ordinary noise of the apartment, no hidden tones.
The final sentence of the chapter came from somewhere she had been avoiding since chapter one:
I kept chasing a missing face. In the end, I found what the missing face was trying to protect.
