Chapter 112
The Custodian Note
Bell brought one thin notebook from a storage room and called it a custodian note by mistake, then corrected to "warning."
It had three entries:
Queue held manually.Face missing at corridor.No name should be entered alone.
Elise looked up from the lines.
"If this is authentic, it's exactly what we argued."
Priya scanned every line for edits. One line at the bottom had ink pressure deeper than the rest.
"Someone wrote while carrying."
"Could be urgency," Bell said.
Mara said, "Could be coercion."
They brought the note into hearing under witness chain addendum.
The clerk asked for writing provenance.
Priya gave her own metadata and said the page edges had no fresh compression.
The judge asked the obvious:
"Will this become public?"
Elise said, "Only through process."
"Then it stays within hearing until verified," the clerk answered.
At lunch, the team waited in a stairwell with no cameras.
Elise told them one thought: if custodians keep warning notes in private, they are not neutral.
Priya nodded and suggested including the note in a public legal filing once verification finished.
Bell asked if that would trigger contempt.
Elise shrugged. "Maybe. But secrecy is already close."
The unknown source sent one last line:
**The custodian note is the room admitting a witness exists.
Elise placed that in the center of her wall and wrote beneath:
No witness exists if nobody can name who protected them.
