The Open Stairway
The stairway was open this time.

Elise climbed two flights with Bell and Priya while Mara waited with the evidence box.
"This is absurdly simple," Priya said.
On the landing they found a maintenance chalk line and one folded sheet tucked under a vent.
Open stairway means owner still avoids witness.
Elise unfolded it and found one old chain map with all the red marks but no names.
Bell said, "This is exactly how the system wanted it."
Priya looked at the map and said, "Then we force names into every red mark."
At hearing, they presented:
- open stairway photographs
- manual chalk marks
- unassigned maintenance maps.
The hearing assistant requested chain annotation from a neutral witness.
Bell gave one immediate statement: route access happened under unknown operator.
Mara offered the unknown source had not been one person but repeated signatures.
Elise held her breath and watched the panel write open stairway on the board.
The panel did not ask for immediate closure. It asked for completion.
Elise wrote one line to keep the team steady:
Open stairway is no magic. It is accountability made visible.
The unknown source sent a final late-night note:

Elise replied with nothing.
