The Absent Signature
At the legal archive, they requested the original owner record.
The clerk handed them three folders and one warning:
"If you can’t find the signature, do not ask why. We can close this case early."
The signatures were all copied, except one blank line.
At line twenty-two, where someone had signed "M. Quinn", the name was absent.
Elise stared.
"Why would someone erase just one witness sign-off?" Bell asked.
Priya ran UV on the page. The blank became visible in invisible ink.
Not all access is for entry. Some is for replacement.
They copied the page and split it into frames.
Mara had been in the building only two days before the recording started.
But the blank sign-off had timestamps older than the hearing.
Elise read the surrounding metadata:
Reason: continuity repair.
"Continuity repair" was never a legal term used in this building.
The clerk, bored by their urgency, offered more tea.
"Everyone says continuity," he said.
Mara had done this in another language once, Priya thought.
Elise asked the room to wait until she left.
At home, she found the kitchen radio emitting a low frequency at 14.6.
She pressed play on the archive feed.
It was just one line, spoken too softly:
I had to erase it before they used her voice again.
Bell said, "That is the first line where guilt sounds less careful."
Elise rewrote the signature page as a legal request:
Restore absent-signature witness.
She did not send it yet.
The absence had become evidence.
Evidence had become a person.
