The Wife Who Gave Everything

Ch. 143 - The Third Desk

Chapter 143

The Third Desk

The court annex had three desks.

No one acknowledged the third.

The first two held clerks; the third held nothing.

Elise asked for its name in the inventory.

The clerk said there was no third desk.

Priya pulled the old floor map and pointed at a faded rectangle.

"There is always a third desk in old layouts."

Bell checked CCTV and found one frame where a third desk appeared for six seconds then vanished.

Elise requested the original camera backup.

The backup opened to a static black section and then one shot of empty wood grain.

Desk C, unassigned. the backup metadata said.

Elise noticed a faint dust pattern on the desk top in the map scan.

Three paper clips, one ring pin, one clip with a crack.

Priya sent the details to an external forensic lab.

The lab confirmed one clip was not common hardware.

It came from an archive labeling kit.

"This is someone who knew both court process and audio processing," Priya said.

Elise sat down at the empty desk.

For one minute she heard only her own breath.

Then a recorder in Priya’s bag started automatically.

It played:

Desk C not for filing. Desk C for delay.

Bell asked if she should stop it.

Elise said yes.

Then no.

She let it play fully.

Last line:

If you sit there, file the third sequence.

At the next hearing session, Elise requested the court to place "Desk C evidence" on record.

Judge ordered immediate inclusion.

The prosecution requested no comment.

At home that night, Bell brought tea and no laughter.

Elise looked at the ring pin in her hand and thought of all the people who had sat and never left a name.
