The stairwell echoed the exact word "hearing" at the same height, every day, at 11:10.
Priya checked the vibration sensor and found one repeating impulse from below.
"It's probably the boiler," Bell said.
Elise said boilers don’t say hearing.
She played back the stairwell recording from the municipal archive.
In the raw waveform, one echo had frequency distortion.
Filtered through a narrow band, it became a whisper:

At court, Elise asked for permission to inspect stairwell firmware.
The judge allowed a technical representative.
Representative from building security said no firmware file had that phrase.
Priya pulled the controller dump and found the phrase in test mode.
Test mode was active on two dates, both during legal reviews.
Bell said the test mode had been disabled with one local command.
Elise compared command logs with service lift routes.
The same operator had run both.
No operator identity.
At 11:10 that day they returned to stairwell and waited.
The echo came again.
Elise turned the recorder toward the wall.
She walked past the landing and reached the point where the building’s old beam was reinforced.
Behind a panel she found three strips of reflective tape and one small chip.
