Shepherding the Rooms
If they wanted one person to fail, they targeted Bell’s old watch.
At 7:05, he told them a clerk had copied the route from the hearing board to a private contractor.
Elise said, "Then we move all timing references to physical cues."
They built a route card with four physical markers: clocktower, annex stair, east utility tunnel, and bus lot.
Priya taped the card under a false floorboard in her studio and carried only a folded copy.
Mara took the lead through the tunnel.
"This is where you were when you first found the red light," Priya whispered.
Bell checked his phone and saw one old alert:
Third-party audit denied.
Elise read the sender: unknown, municipal.
Helen had still not returned to the hearing case after the delay request.
"No one is defending this publicly," Bell said.
Mara said, "Then we defend the room with room."
At the old annex stair, they found the utility door open and one of the red tags from before, now burned.
Elise held the card up and found the burn line exactly matched the third signature mark on one folder.
"Someone has been testing our pattern." Priya said.
They entered and found a small desk, a dead coffee pot, and one notebook with no words until last page.
On that page, in tiny script:
Shepherding means keep each room moving, because still rooms get named.
Elise read it and looked at Bell.
"Who writes like that?" Bell asked.
Priya scanned the page and saw old water stains. "Could be your father."
Bell didn't answer.
They moved through the tunnel until they reached a narrow door with no label.
Behind it: a steel cabinet with folders and one old recorder.
Priya loaded the recorder.
There was a voice saying:
I cannot keep the child in one room. That's why I made this split.
`Who is "I"?' Elise asked quietly.
Bell said, "Could be the operator. Could be your father."
Mara said, "Could be the room."
Priya finished the transfer logs and found one section not seen by others:
MARA: if any room asks your name twice, refuse and redirect.
Elise laughed through tears. "That line is exactly what happened."
At the tunnel exit, they found their route card torn in half.
Mara found one half in her coat. Bell found the other under a stair.
Both halves fit perfectly.
Priya called it proof of a handler still inside.
Elise called it an invitation.
Tonight they split the cards and made two new routes: route shepherd and route emergency.
Bell asked the practical question: where to place the final witness packet if the hearing gets shut down?
Elise answered by writing in the card:
If no hearing, open locker 5 at clocktower. If not accessible, use station 3 public shelf.
The card was now more map than story.
Her phone buzzed with a final text from the unknown voice:
Don't bring paper in first light. Bring breath.
Mara laughed dryly. "Poetic intimidation."
Elise responded not with anger but one line:
We will bring both.
