Chapter 56
Signal on the Third Floor
At 7:02, Priya said she had a signal with no carrier.
"It’s in the room logs."
No one answered.
Bell arrived with two folders and one cup of bitter coffee.
Elise had kept the hearing timeline, and now she realized one gap after the noon hearing.
"There is a live request for third-floor entry this evening," Bell said.
The room at third floor, old annex, had a temporary sign saying AUTHORIZED MAINTENANCE and a fresh tape on the panel.
Mara said, "They moved in public after hearing request. That means they’re panicking."
Priya entered first and connected an adapter to a dead monitor.
"No power," she said.
Bell reached under the panel and found a hidden battery pack.
When it powered the monitor, the screen flashed to a single line:
IF YOU LOOK AT THE THIRD FLOOR, YOU LOOK AT WHAT THEY DID TO THE CLOCK.
Elise stepped closer and saw one split-screen: a hallway and one recording desk.
Bell said, "No camera had to be installed. This is generated from the room."
Priya pulled one hidden track and found a folder titled WITNESS_HOLD_BACKUP.
Inside: two files, one labeled MARA_OPEN, one labeled ELISE_BACK.
She played the first one.
Mara’s voice: "If I disappear, keep the room open."
Elise frowned. "That sounds like she didn’t intend this as a threat."
Priya then played ELISE_BACK.
Elise’s own voice, low and breathless:
June is not me. June is what we keep moving to prove she had a place.
She did not remember saying it.
Bell said, "Could be synthetic."
Priya checked one waveform marker and shook her head. "No synthetic. This came from a room in real time."
Mara stood very still. "Then someone had access to that room this week."
At the bottom of the monitor, they found one instruction:
Third floor is a witness switch.
Priya copied one still from the monitor and sent two messages: to Helen and to a neutral auditor.
Helen replied: Need it with a legal hash, not raw.
Priya immediately printed the hash from the local reader.
Elise made one careful note:
Third floor confirmation makes private claim public.
By noon the room had no power again.
Elise and Bell left with one folder and one sealed envelope.
The envelope contained only an index card with one code:
11/17 > 3F > SWITCH ONCE.
Mara read it and said, "That means they finally told us what to do."
Elise said, "No. It means they told us what to fear."
At home, she waited for evening with no phone use, and when 11:17 came she turned the lights off and listened for the room breath.
It made no sound.
Only in one second did she hear a pulse in her own chest.
