The Unfamiliar Face

The hearing was not a courtroom; it was a secure room with thin carpeting and a single door that closed hard enough to shake dust out of the corners.

Mara brought fresh copies. Priya carried the ledger, Bell held the route card.

The panel started with one technical request: "How did you date each file?"

Priya answered with the hash line and manual witness timestamps.

Elise watched their faces, looking for the moment they decided not to deny everything.

At 11:17 on the wall clock, the panel requested witness remark.

Elise stood.

No face in the room means no witness in the chain.

Bell added: The room we call S has a mirror protocol without a witness channel.

The question came from one panelist: "Do you know who left the anonymous voice messages?"

Mara answered first. "We think the same system that moved names."

Priya said, "Could be a human with maintenance access."

Elise said, "Could be one who had to protect a witness and is now trying to recover control."

The room was still.

One assistant entered with the hearing decision draft and no final conclusion.

Supplemental review granted, identity of witness remains unresolved.

Elise read the sentence and felt every loss in it.

Then the panel added: No immediate punitive action without additional corroboration.

Mara whispered, "This is their polite decline."

Bell said, "No, this is a stage."

At the corridor after the hearing, Elise found a face on the staircase she did not recognize and walked backward without seeing it.

The face vanished before she turned the corner.

Priya said, "Unfamiliar face means either stranger or witness who avoids recording."

Elise looked down at her shoes and realized her hand was still shaking.

She called Helen and asked one direct question.

"If this does not close, what next?"

Helen said, "We push with publication, then appeal. But if publication fails, we can escalate with protected whistleblower route."

Elise nodded, then wrote:

Familiar faces were never proof. Unfamiliar are warnings.
