The Return of Clerk Zero

Priya looked over and said, "Where were you?"

She showed the notebook and said, "Not where the law says a clerk can be."

Bell moved closer. "We still don't trust ghosts."

She gave him one look and laid four pages on the hood of his car.

They were copies of the same hearing logs with one change in every version.

At line 6: Witness consent queue there was a new entry:

CLERK 0: route not recorded.

Mara whispered, "Clerk zero."

The woman said, "Call me that or call me nothing."

Elise asked, "Where were you on the hearing day?"

She answered with one sentence. "In the corridor behind the camera with the missing bracket."

Priya loaded the pages and compared with her own.

No timestamp mismatch.

Bell said, "So you were witness to the no-face segment."

Clerk: "I was there because I had to keep one room alive."

Mara asked, "Whom did you keep it alive for?"

She answered, "The person you call June if you still need a person."

Elise stood still.

The clerk then handed over one old flash key and a small chip.

This was my final witness line. She said.

Inside the chip: a single sequence of nine frames, one of Bell entering stairwell and one of an unseen hand pinning a blank paper into a slot.

Priya said, "This is the only frame where there is no delay."

Elise asked why now.

"Because you moved from guess to proof."

The clerk turned and walked toward the utility lanes.

Bell started after her.

"Wait," she said. "Don't do that. If you pull me in, the chain returns to one face and nothing else."

They didn't follow.

Elise called Helen from the road.

Have witness zero as confidential addendum.

Helen agreed.

Back home, Elise pinned the chip to her evidence board and wrote:

Clerk returns only to confirm route, not to absolve.

Then she sent a single sentence to the team:

We got our first in-court witness without a face.
