Chapter 70
The Judge Without a Name
The hearing panel assigned a temporary judge with no public name.
"Temporary name for internal handling only," Helen explained.
Elise rolled her eyes and then did not.
The judge sat behind one glass wall and read the appeal package slowly.
"You ask for witness protection by process correction."
Priya nodded. "Because witness identities were moved between rooms."
Bell added, "And one required signature was treated as administrative, not personal."
The judge looked up. "Can you show a witness refusing to be a person while still a process?"
Mara answered, "You have our logs."
Elise laid out the operator ledger and spoke carefully:
At 11:17, room S showed no-person witness queue.
At 11:17, signatures remained incomplete.
At 11:17, private channel rerouted names.
The judge asked for one final line from each witness.
Bell said, "I misfiled access routes before I realized what they did."
Priya said, "Technical evidence supports a manipulated chain."
Mara said, "The room architecture was treated as a witness."
Elise said, "I want to protect a person from being used as a procedural placeholder."
The judge asked if they had an affidavit from the first missing witness.
No one had one.
Mara said, "Not named, but witnessed."
The room waited again.
The judge gave a short hold instruction and then one question:
"You said one voice sent you messages. Could this be one of your own group?"
Bell glanced at Elise.
Priya answered first. "We crosschecked with route logs and devices. Not from a member."
Elise said, "Could still be from a system."
The judge nodded once.
The order was short and maddening:
Temporary audit and independent restoration ordered.
No admission of negligence.
No final determination pending
Not victory.
Not defeat.
Outside, the waiting room smelled like old plastic.
Mara laughed once, brittle. "At least they gave us audit."
Bell said, "They call that middle ground."
Elise looked at the courthouse floor and said, "There is no middle room."
Later that day, the anonymous number sent one line:
The judge is not the room. But the room made room for this judge.
Elise wrote it with the date.
In the appeal package she added one extra paragraph:
The witness cannot be the first claimant if that claimant erases the chain.
