The Face That Won't Sign

"Who had authority to approve witness substitution?"

Bell said, "No one person I know."

Mara said, "The room was authorized through layered signatures."

Priya said, "Technical review supports that."

Elise opened her statement:

When one witness refuses to be named, the room takes its place.

The room stayed still.

The person at the table asked for one final witness statement from any participant.

Elise said, "I am no longer witness. I am the route."

Bell looked up.

Priya added, "The route has six points and one missing."

Mara opened the ledger and asked the one question they had avoided:

Who is June?

No answer from the panel.

Mara repeated: June is maybe a person. Maybe a file state.

The judge wrote this under "issue for further determination."

After the hearing, Elise and Priya took the side staircase where no cameras once had names.

Elise checked her phone: one message from a blocked number with no sender.

You are not allowed a face if you cannot keep the room open.

Priya said, "That's not help."

Bell said, "That's confession without author."

They made tea in the stair landing and made the call schedule for next week in silence.

At home, Elise sat with the line "face that won’t sign" and realized it was no longer about a signature mark.

It was about whether anyone could put a legitimate seal on a room that erased names.

Mara said to her quietly, "We can ask for public witness in law school terms."

Elise answered, "I can only ask for a process that doesn't require faces."

No one argued.

She wrote the final line for the day:
