Chapter 78
The Lone Archive
Elise waited outside the city archive until the security guard switched shift.
Bell said they needed a neutral copy of the final ledger, one that could not be linked to any of them.
Priya brought a portable scanner and a box of unlabeled disks.
"No internet," she said. "No timestamps outside your own watch."
The building was quiet enough to hear their shoes.
Inside, they opened one old steel room and removed a box marked only with chalk.
ARCHIVE A: unresolved.
Mara lifted the lid. Three folders came out and nothing else.
Priya checked the first: route maps with partial signatures. Bell checked the second: hand-marked correction sheets. Mara checked the third: a plain sheet with one sentence in red:
If one room refuses a name, name the room as witness room.
Elise wrote the line into her notebook.
The archivist returned with coffee and no questions.
"You know the clock is moving."
Elise said, "Yes. 11:17 again."
They copied everything into one sealed disk set and one blind copy.
At noon, a legal messenger arrived and asked for the "lone archive contact."
Bell gave him a code phrase only:
Third room stays open.
The man nodded and left.
Priya said, "That means they heard about this room."
Elise asked, "Or they know the system language."
At home, she re-read the archive list and crossed out three lines:
Witness substitution
temporary consent
private transfer
and wrote one new line:
Room witness protocol requires named human witness in chain.
In the mirror, she heard the old breathing line from the beginning.
No one was gone. Just names were not yet.
