Chapter 79
The Last Floor Note
At 6:40 p.m., Elise found a note on the last-floor stair:
You cannot prove a face without a name.
It was written on legal-grade paper with the same dry ink she had seen in the operator book.
"This is either proof or mockery," Bell said, turning it over.
Mara placed the note next to her coffee and said, "Either way, we keep moving."
Priya loaded the new archive copy and found three missing bytes in one sequence.
"Not digital corruption. Someone removed one line segment physically before we scanned."
Elise stared at the line where it had vanished:
...public route without witness...
She felt a kind of fury, clean and brief.
"If they know we have this, then they know we're ready for final hearing."
Bell said, "Or they know we are still weak on one witness signature."
The hearing office called.
Correction hearing scheduled after midnight. Bring non-interpretive evidence.
Mara asked, "Interpretive evidence means what?"
Priya answered, "The exact thing they cannot call emotion."
Elise rewrote three cards:
- chain dates only
- witness signatures only
- room maintenance anomalies.
She kept one card blank in case the final line changed at the hearing.
In the courthouse annex stairwell, they met a volunteer cleaner who had never spoken to them before.
"You are the one with the missing list," she said.
Elise blinked. "Which list?"
The list nobody wants.'
The cleaner left the line and left.
No one looked surprised.
Later, Bell found one hidden camera socket with no lens.
He asked, "Why no lens now?"
Priya said, "Because someone started believing this room had enough."
That sentence did not sit right.
Elise ended the day with one sentence in the hearing statement:
I am submitting what exists, not what can be made convenient.
