Chapter 105
The Voice Under the Bed
The breathing beneath the hospital bed was not human.
It was the sound of a machine trying to remember how a person breathed.
Daniel knelt and looked beneath the frame. A black recorder sat in the dust. Its red light blinked with each breath.
Rowan stood behind him.
“Do not touch it,” she said.
“It belongs to your mother.”
“It belongs to the person who recorded her.”
Claire took the blue pencil and slid the recorder into view.
The machine played Elise's voice.
“My name is Elise Vale. I cannot move my mouth the way I want. That does not mean I cannot choose.”
Daniel covered his eyes.
The recording continued.
“My husband believes silence is permission. He is wrong. My daughter is not a model. My daughter is not a witness. My daughter is a child.”
Rowan began to cry.
The hospital room changed. Elise sat upright in the bed. Her face was weak, but her eyes were clear.
“Daniel,” she said. “Do not decide for me.”
He stepped toward her.
“I am sorry.”
“Sorry is not a witness.”
The recorder stopped.
Under the bed, the machine printed a consent form.
At the bottom, Elise had signed her own name.
The hospital system rejected it.
PATIENT CAPACITY UNVERIFIED.
Claire took the form.
“We verify it,” she said.
Rowan placed her hand over her mother's signature.
The status changed.
PATIENT CHOICE RECORDED.
The floor below the hospital bed opened.
