Ch. 118 - Lena's First Memory

Chapter 118

Lena's First Memory

Lena's first memory was not a birth.

It was Claire standing beside the crib.

Claire was eight. Lena was three months old. Their mother had left the room. The baby cried until Claire lifted her.

“You said you would stay,” Lena's voice said.

“I was a child.”

“So was I.”

The memory showed Claire walking the room, whispering the same sentence again and again.

“It is all right. It is all right. It is all right.”

The child beside the door watched.

“That was the first copy,” she said.

“Of me?”

“Of the sentence.”

The room had learned Claire's voice before it learned her face. It had used her promise to soothe Lena, then used Lena's dependence to define Claire.

Mara entered the memory.

She was twelve and carried a notebook.

“I wrote down what you said,” she told Claire.

“Why?”

“Because Mother forgot.”

The memory shifted. The notebook became a clinic record. The sentence became a treatment protocol.

STABLE WITNESS LANGUAGE: IT IS ALL RIGHT.

Claire tore the page.

The child beside the door smiled.

“Now say something else.”

Claire looked at the crib.

“It is not all right.”

The room opened.

Lena's first memory walked out.
