Chapter 140
The First Room Below the Lake
The first room below the lake was built before the clinic.
It held one table, two chairs, and a ledger sealed in glass. Claire saw Everett as a boy on one side and Marisol as a girl on the other.
“They learned ownership here,” Mara said.
The boy placed a coin on the table. “Whoever holds it decides what happened.”
Marisol took the coin and dropped it into the lake.
The room shook.
“She refused the first rule,” Claire said.
“And Everett spent his life rebuilding it.”
The glass ledger opened. Its first page held one sentence: A WITNESS IS A PERSON WHO CAN BE BLAMED.
Claire crossed out the word blamed.
The ink became HEARD.
The room's door opened onto a tunnel marked sixteen.
