Chapter 171
The Fourth Hour
The fourth hour was a conversation between Claire and Lena.
Lena asked, “If I keep this memory, what happens to you?”
Claire answered, “I become someone who can continue.”
“And if I give it back?”
“You become someone who has to live with what happened.”
Lena chose to keep it.
Not because Claire asked her, but because Lena believed sisters could carry different parts of the same grief.
The memory ended with Lena saying, “You do not owe me the hour.”
Claire woke beside the handless clock.
Mara was crying.
“You remembered,” Mara said.
“I remembered Lena chose.”
The clock opened.
Room Thirty-Six waited inside it.
