The cup belonged to Everett Bell.
His name was not written anywhere, but Claire knew the chipped blue rim. He had used it on the ferry the night the lake opened, before he became a voice in the walls and a signature on a dozen sealed orders.
“He’s here,” Aster said.
“No. His record is here.”
The distinction mattered. Claire had spent too long mistaking records for people.
The coffee rippled. A sentence appeared in the surface, each letter formed by a tremor in the brown liquid.
