They moved the records out of the central hall and into rooms with windows.

No more locked stacks. No more unmarked doors. Every file required a name, a consent note, and a way to withdraw it.

The work was slow. Rowan built the index. Elise checked dates. Aster designed the refusal forms. Claire sat with people who wanted to tell their stories and people who wanted to take them back.

The archive resisted the new rules.

It misplaced folders. It changed corridor lengths. It produced doors where no door had been requested.

But resistance was no longer authority.

At the first public meeting, a woman raised her hand. “Who owns the archive?”

Claire looked at the shelves, then at the people gathered around them.

“No one,” she said. “That means everyone has to keep watching it.”

From the far wall came a soft knock.

Three times.

Then a fourth, from inside Cabin Twelve.
