Chapter 236
The First Promise
No one will be made to speak.
That was the promise.
Claire knew the handwriting because she had written it years ago, before the lake, before the archive, before she understood that memory could be inherited like a wound.
“I was here,” she said.
Nora nodded. “You were the first child to come back.”
Claire remembered flashes: a red scarf, a wet floor, Nora’s hand around hers, a door that would not close. She had not been a visitor. She had been part of the original group.
The archive had erased the memory to keep her moving.
“You made me forget.”
“I made you survive.”
“Those are not the same thing.”
Nora stepped aside.
The unopened door began to open by itself, revealing a bright room beyond it.
Inside waited the memory Claire had spent her life avoiding.
