Chapter 35
The Last Word
The word on the wall completed itself.
THE WITNESS IS NOT THE ONE WHO SAW. THE WITNESS IS THE ONE WHO SPEAKS LAST.
Claire read it twice.
The Mara model had vanished. The lake beyond the door was gone too, replaced by a concrete wall. Daniel stood on the wet platform with his gun lowered. The copy held the empty paper cup.
“Who speaks last?” Tess asked.
The answer appeared beneath the rule.
THE PERSON WHO OWNS THE RECORD.
Lucy shook her head. “That is not a rule. That is a threat.”
Eli pressed his palm to the wall. “It has begun the public phase.”
“What public phase?” Claire asked.
The school alarm stopped.
Every phone in the chamber lit at once. Claire's phone was still inside the evidence bag, but the screen showed a county alert: MISSING WOMAN FOUND — PSYCHIATRIC EVENT UNDER INVESTIGATION.
Her photograph appeared beneath the headline.
Daniel took out his own phone. “They released this to the press.”
“They are saying I am the missing woman?”
“They are saying you are a danger to yourself.”
Tess opened a news feed. The story had already been copied by three local stations. One included footage from Cabin 12. The woman in the video looked like Claire.
“They are making the record before we can answer it,” Claire said.
The copy looked at her. “That is what the witness rule means.”
“Then we speak first.”
“You cannot. The county system will reject your voice.”
Claire understood why Owen had brought them to the school. The experiment was not only about memory. It was about establishing an official version of the person before the person could contradict it.
Daniel moved toward the stairs.
“We need a lawyer.”
“We need the archive,” Claire said.
“We need to survive the next hour.”
At the top of the stairs, every door in the school opened.
Outside, sirens approached.
The copy took the blue pencil from Claire's hand. “There is one record they cannot edit.”
“Which one?”
She pointed toward the gym.
“The record the children wrote themselves.”
