Ch. 36 - The Children Wrote Names

Chapter 36

The Children Wrote Names

The children had written their names beneath the gym floor.

Eli knew where to find the access panel. He lifted a square of rubber matting and exposed a row of metal plates. Each plate carried a child’s name and a date.

“The program made us write after every session,” he said. “They said handwriting proved continuity.”

“Did it?” Tess asked.

“It proved that someone held our hands.”

Eli used the blue pencil on the first plate. The surface opened.

Beneath it, hundreds of slips of paper filled a shallow chamber. Names. Dates. Short sentences written in different levels of handwriting.

I am still Rowan.

I am not Lucy.

My father signed.

They told me the lake was a room.

Claire crouched and picked up a slip.

The handwriting was hers.

I remember the coat.

The date was eleven months earlier.

“You wrote this,” Tess said.

“I do not remember.”

“That is why it matters.”

Daniel filled a canvas bag with the slips. “We cannot take all of them.”

Lucy grabbed his wrist. “Take the ones with the names. Leave the ones with the lies.”

“How do we tell the difference?”

“The lies use full sentences.”

Claire found a slip with only a single word.

MARA.

Beneath it was a number: 4:17.

The sirens stopped outside.

Owen Bell's security team entered the school.

The gym lights went white. A camera mounted over the basketball hoop turned toward Claire.

“Smile,” Owen said through the speaker. “The public is about to meet you.”

Claire lifted the blue pencil.

On the gym wall, she wrote the names of every child she could read.

Eli added the dates.

Lucy added the word alive beside three names.

Noah stood beneath the camera and said, “My name is Noah Hart. My wife is Lucy Hart. Our son is Eli Hart. We were not missing.”

The camera feed flickered.

Daniel stepped beside him. “My name is Daniel Vale. I signed a sealed settlement that concealed a child.”

The feed cut.

Outside, the sirens started again.

Owen's voice disappeared.

Claire looked at the wall.

One name remained unwritten.

ROWAN VALE.
