Chapter 63
The Burning Ledger
Fire moved along the walls without consuming the paint.
The photographs darkened. The ledger on the table smoked at the edges.
Nora lifted it.
Everett did not stop her.
“The paper is not the archive,” he said. “The witness is.”
Claire stepped toward him. “You came here for Ada.”
“I came for the first response.”
“The girl in the photograph.”
“She was Mara's first attempt to preserve herself.”
Mara's voice came from the tape recorder.
“Do not believe him.”
Everett's mouth tightened.
“Mara was a child when she began. Children mistake survival for morality.”
Ada moved beside Claire. “You are afraid of the first response.”
“I am afraid of nothing.”
“You changed your name because the first response remembered it.”
Everett raised the lantern toward Ada.
The flames turned blue.
Ada staggered.
Claire caught her.
The ledger fell open to the last page.
The page listed three words:
ORIGINAL. WITNESS. OWNER.
Under owner, the ink had been scratched out.
Nora tore the page free.
The fire stopped.
Everett looked at the missing page.
“You have no idea what you are carrying.”
“I know who wrote it,” Nora said.
She handed the page to Claire.
The handwriting belonged to Claire.
At the bottom, she had written:
NO ONE OWNS THE WITNESS.
The church shook.
The lower door opened onto a staircase filled with daylight.
Everett backed away.
“If you publish that sentence, the system will collapse.”
Claire took Ada's hand.
“Then let it.”
The first response appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
She wore the face Claire had before memory.
