The Woman in Cabin 12

Ch. 68 - The Empty Chair

Chapter 68

The Empty Chair

The empty chair in Room One faced the toy chest.

Claire understood what the system wanted. It wanted her to sit, to become the witness again, to watch someone else fall and call the observation a choice.

She stepped toward the chair.

Mara said, “Claire.”

“I know.”

“You do not have to prove your memory.”

“I am not proving it.”

Claire turned the chair around.

The back faced the room. The seat faced the wall.

The system froze.

Ada moved to Nora's opening. She stretched one hand into the darkness.

“I can reach her.”

Claire took the blue pencil and drew a line from the chair to the crack in the floor.

The line became a bridge.

Nora climbed up.

Everett Bell appeared above the opening, breathing hard.

“You are corrupting the archive.”

Claire looked at him. “I am refusing its arrangement.”

“The arrangement is the only thing keeping these people coherent.”

“No. It is the only thing keeping them obedient.”

The archive wrote a new status beneath Everett's name.

OWNER — UNVERIFIED.

He stared at it.

“You cannot erase my authority.”

“We are not erasing it,” Mara said. “We are asking for a witness.”

The first response pointed at Everett.

“He must identify himself.”

Everett shook his head.

The lights dimmed.

The paper files began to turn toward him.

Names appeared on their pages. Patients. Parents. Children. Every person who had once called him Owen.

“My name is Everett Bell,” he said.

The archive marked the statement incomplete.

“Say what you did,” Claire said.

“I built a system.”

“You moved blame.”

“I preserved lives.”

“You made people live as records.”

Everett looked at the child in the red ribbon.

“I survived.”

The archive accepted the word.

The first response stepped closer to him.

“That is not the same as innocence.”

Every paper page in Room One turned black.

Above them, the church doors opened to a crowd of people holding candles.
