Chapter 74
The Second Act
The records came out of the lake at sunrise.
Pages landed on the roofs of Bellwether. Photographs caught in trees. Death certificates floated across the resort road. Names appeared on the wet windows of Cabin 12.
The public watched the archive return piece by piece.
Claire emerged from the water with Ada, Rowan, Mara, Daniel, Lucy, Noah, Eli, and Tess.
Everett Bell did not emerge.
The owner chair was found beneath the lake three days later. It contained no body, only a paper cup marked 4:17.
The courthouse could not deny the records because too many people held copies. The county attorney resigned before the first hearing. The police seized the resort. The families whose names had been erased stood on the shore and read them aloud.
Claire's death certificate was found in the reeds.
The cause of death had changed.
Witness failure — cancelled.
Ada held the page.
“What happens now?” she asked.
Claire looked at the lake. Beneath the water, the old clinic lights had gone dark.
“Now we find everyone who is still inside the record.”
Mara stood beside them, no longer wearing the clothes from the accident. Tess had given her a red scarf. It covered the scar at her temple but not the fact that she had returned.
Daniel held Rowan's hand.
Rowan looked at Ada. “Are you staying?”
Ada answered, “I am not a part of you.”
“I know.”
“I am not a replacement.”
“I know.”
“Then I am staying.”
The first reporters reached the shore.
Claire faced the cameras.
“My name is Claire Rowan,” she said. “I was a witness. I was also a participant. The story does not become clean because the records are public.”
She looked at Ada and Rowan.
“There are still rooms beneath this town. There are still people who have been told their memories belong to someone else.”
The lake moved behind her.
On the window of Cabin 12, a new message appeared.
ROOM THREE OPEN.
Claire turned toward it.
The second act began.
