Chapter 92
The Town Without a Record
Bellwether lost power at midnight.
Without lights, the town looked older. The resort signs vanished. The courthouse became a black shape. The lake reflected nothing.
Claire led the passengers toward the old library, the only public building with a paper archive not connected to county systems.
Inside, the librarian recognized June Bell.
“You came back,” she said.
“I brought the names.”
The librarian unlocked the basement.
Boxes covered the floor. School records. Property deeds. Newspaper clippings. Funeral programs.
Claire opened a box marked 1998.
Inside was a town directory. Every Bellwether family had a page.
The Bell family page had been cut out.
So had the Rowan page.
“They removed the families from the town,” Tess said.
“Not the families,” June answered. “The witnesses.”
Ada found a list of library visitors. Her name appeared beside a date fourteen years earlier.
“I was here,” she said.
“You were a child,” Claire replied.
“I was looking for a book.”
The librarian placed a key on the table.
“The book is still here.”
It was a children’s atlas of lakes. Inside the cover, someone had written a message.
A town can erase a person only if every door agrees.
The library doors locked.
Outside, footsteps surrounded the building.
The captain's voice came through the public-address system.
“You have entered a town that does not remember you.”
Claire held the atlas open.
“Then we will teach it.”
The basement lights came on.
Every page in the archive showed the same blank face.
