Chapter 93
The Library Witness
The librarian stood in the center of the basement.
Her name was Ruth Bell.
“You are Everett's sister,” Claire said.
“His oldest sister.”
“June said she was the only one who turned off a machine.”
Ruth looked toward June. “June turned off one machine. I turned off the town.”
She opened a hidden drawer beneath the atlas table.
Inside were hundreds of library cards. Each carried a patient's name, a borrowed book, and a date.
“The clinic needed places to hide records,” Ruth said. “The library gave them neutral space.”
“You helped them,” Daniel said.
“I recorded what they removed.”
She handed Claire a card.
The borrower was Lena Rowan.
Book: The House at the End of the Lake.
Return date: never.
“Lena used the book to hide the witness key,” Ruth said. “She knew Claire would look for it only after she was gone.”
“Why did you keep the card?”
“Because the library is a witness too.”
The blank faces on the archive pages began to sharpen. Names returned. The town directory rebuilt itself.
Outside, the security team broke the front windows.
Ruth handed Claire a ring of keys.
“Every door in Bellwether has a paper lock.”
“What do they open?”
“The places the town agreed not to remember.”
The first key fit a basement wall.
Behind it was a staircase descending beneath the library.
At the bottom, a child was waiting with a book.
The child looked at Claire.
“Are you the witness?”
Claire looked at Ada, Rowan, and the passengers.
“I am one of them.”
The child opened the book.
Inside was a map of the town with one location marked red.
