Chapter 97
The Lake Comes Home
Water entered the library through the basement drains.
It rose around the archive table, carrying paper cards to the ceiling. People climbed onto chairs. Ruth kept one hand on the ledger.
“The lake is not flooding,” Ada said. “The archive is returning.”
Claire looked at the basement wall. A doorway had appeared beneath the old shelves.
Beyond it lay the House That Remembers.
The rooms were underwater, but the objects remained dry inside floating glass cases.
“Room Five wants a witness,” Mara said.
“It has one.”
“It wants a choice.”
Claire entered the doorway.
The water closed over her head.
She found herself in the bedroom where Lena had faded. The coat was gone. On the bed lay a new object: a black notebook.
Its cover carried Claire's name.
Inside were pages written by Claire during the four hours she had given away.
I am not afraid of forgetting. I am afraid of remembering alone.
The next page read:
If the town remembers with me, the program cannot make me a patient.
The final page was blank.
Claire wrote a sentence.
I choose to remember with witnesses.
The house released her.
She surfaced in the library beside Ada.
The water drained from the basement.
On the central table, every object had been returned to its owner.
Except one.
The black notebook remained open.
